THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, July 14, 2010.

Jean Miriam Riggs, 93, died Wednesday, July 7, 2010, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 17, at Calvary United Methodist Church.

Jean was born in Ralston, the third of eight children born to the Rev. Fred and Lilly (Repp) Riggs. She graduated from East High in Des Moines and then went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in foods and nutrition from Iowa State in 1939. She later earned a master’s degree in institutional management from ISU.

She was director of dietary services at hospitals in Chicago, West Virginia and Pittsburg, Pa. She served as director of the school lunch program for Highland Park, Ill., before returning to ISU to a teaching position. She left ISU to become director of food service and associate director of housing for Kansas State University for 22 years before retiring and returning to Ames. In 1981, the National Association of College and University Food Service recognized her for her outstanding contributions by awarding her their highest honor, the Theodore W. Minah Distinguished Service Award.

She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Ames, a lifetime member of the American Dietetic Association, a member of the National Association of College and University Food Service and a charter member of College Avenue United Methodist Church in Manhattan, Kan.

She is survived by two brothers, Donald (Doris) and Carl (Connie); one sister, Mary Alice Allen; one sister-in-law, Darlene; 32 nieces and nephews; and 62 great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Beth; three brothers, Max, Robert and Glenn; three sisters-in law, Ann, Florence, LaVona; two brothers-in-law, John and Max; and six nieces and nephews.

Memorial gifts may be directed to Iowa State University Foundation in Ames to be used to provide scholarship funds for undergraduate students majoring in dietetics, to Calvary United Methodist Church, Israel Family Hospice House or Emergency Shelter House in Ames.

Adams Funeral Home and Cremation Service is assisting the family with arrangements.
