EARLY PIONEER PASSED AWAY

MRS. JOHN HOLM HAD LIVED IN STORY COUNTY FOR 77 YEARS

Mrs. John J. Holm, whose funeral was held here Wednesday, had lived in Story county for 77 years and was no doubt one of the oldest residents of the county. She came here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Erick Soken, 1856 and has lived here continuously since that time. The Soken family lived for many years on the place three miles west of town where Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Knutson now live and where she died last week. After her marriage she lived in the community northeast of Roland.

Mrs. John J. Holm was born August 26, 1855, in Lee county, Illinois, and died March 25, 1934, at Roland at the age of 78 years, 7 months and 29 days. She came to Story county with her parents in a covered wagon when she was a year old.

She was united in marriage in 1879 to John Holm. To this union nine children were born, three sons and six daughters. Those surviving are Lewis of Marshalltown, Mrs. Sarah Knutson of west of Roland, Mrs. Bertha Anderson of Radcliffe, Mrs. Emily Lenning of McCallsburg, Eddie of Zearing, Mrs. Amy Gjerde of McCallsburg, and Mrs. Jennie Johnson of Roland. She also leaves 26 grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Emily Carr at Story City, and three brothers, John Jacobson at Adrian, N. D., Bartle Jacobson at Story City, and Martin Jacobson at Winthrop, Minn. Her husband, John Holm, a son Eddie, and a daughter, Hannah, have preceded her in death.

Mrs. Holm had been failing for several years, but had been able to be up and around until the last week, when she was taken ill with a severe heart attack, which was followed by a light stroke. She died at the home of her daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Knutson of web of Roland, where she had been staying recently.

The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at the Knutson home and at Salem church, her pastor, Rev. H. N. Bakke of McCallsburg, officiating with Rev. Olaf Holen assisting. Interment was made in the Roland cemetery. The pall bearers were Ernest Jacobson, Leonard Nelson, Sylvester Holm, Jesse Holm, Harvey Anderson, and Joel Anderson. Musical numbers were at a solo at the home and also at the church by Ted Quam, and two duets by Mr. and Mrs. O. S. Boyd. Donations were made to the mission in her memory by former neighbors in the community northeast of Roland, and also by Zion congregation of which she was a member.
