Reuben Thomas Ellwood was born Oct. 3, 1917, on a farm near Radcliffe, to Gustav and Torina (Olson) Eltervaag/Ellwood. He graduated in 1936 from Ellsworth High School. Reuben then met Ruth Eloise McCollom. They were married Aug. 16, 1942, in Nevada. The newlyweds settled on a farm just south of Radcliffe to start their married life together. Then they moved to Colo. In 1950, they bought a farm near Ellsworth, where they spent the rest of their married lives. In addition to farming, He sold feed for Walnut Grove and farm seeds for Dekalb for 35 years.

In the 1990s, Reuben and Ruth bought a trailer home in Alamo, Texas, where they spent many winters and Reuben loved singing with a men’s group.

In 2002, his beloved wife, Ruth, died.

In January 2007, he moved to Grand Forks, N.D., where he lived at Tufte Manor and Woodside Village.

He was baptized in Salem Lutheran Church near Radcliffe and was confirmed at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Radcliffe. He belonged to Trinity Lutheran Church in Ellsworth for nearly 60 years.

Those he has left to treasure his memory are four children, Carol (Doug) Fosse, of Grand Forks, N.D., Tom (Helen), of Ellsworth, Ginny (Jim) Bollman, of Grand Forks, N.D., and Archie (Sharon), of Riverview, Fla.; nine grandchildren, Chris (Alana) Fosse, Kara Fosse Lian, Alisha Ellwood, Shana Ellwood (Andy) Tischaefer, Hilary Ellwood, Lana Bollman McArthur, Mitch Bollman, Archie “Ole” (April) Ellwood and Bart Ellwood; eight great-grandchildren, Henry Ellwood Fosse, Ella Dawn Fosse, Gracie Ruth Lian, Jaxon Palmer Lian, Samuel Thomas Tischaefer, Coraline Faye Tischaefer, Alexander Lynn McArthur and James Reuben McArthur; one sister, Gertrude O’Dell, of Yucaipa, Calif.; one brother, Richard (Doris) Ellwood, of Radcliffe; and three sisters-in-law, Ardis Ellwood, of Forest City, Grace Miller, of Las Vegas, and Peg McCollom, of Colo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one brother, Stanley; and two sisters, Mildred Angello and Hazel Hahner.

Reuben was a joy and gift to his family. For his quick wit, razor-sharp mind, and moving poetry to his generosity and loving spirit, he will be remembered.
