FUNERALS HELD LAST WEEK FOR MRS. WICKS AND MISS RAYMOND

Funeral services were held here last week for two old residents of the community, Mrs. Nels T Wicks who died at her home in Roland Tuesday, and Miss Julia Raymond, formerly of this place, who died in Des Moines Wednesday.

Mrs. Nels T. Wicks

Caroline Nelson was born at Newark, Ill., Sept. 29, 1864, and died at Roland November 14, 1933, at the age of 69 years, one month and 15 days. Her parents were Nels and Olena Nelson.

She was married to Nels T. Wicks at Morris, Ill., on July 23, 1883. Eight children were born of whom three, Thomas, Ora and Clarence died in childhood. Those surviving are Mrs. Ora Sougstad of Fedora, S. D., Mrs. Nettie Strum of Roland, Mrs. Tuelida Hanson of Los Angeles, Cal., Clarence Wicks of Roland, and Mrs. Eunice Kelley of Chicago, Ill. She also leaves 12 grandchildren, and a brother, Knute Nelson of Estherville. A sister, Anna Nelson, died seven years ago.

She came to Roland in 1887 and lived for many years on a farm southeast of town. The family moved to town in 1930, where she has since resided. Her husband preceded her in death just a year and a month, on October 14, 1932.

Mrs. Wicks had been in ill health for four years and her condition became critical a few days before her death.

The funeral was held Friday afternoon at the residence and at Salem church, Rev. Olaf Holen officiating. Interment was made in the Roland cemetery. The pall bearers were nephews of the deceased, the same who officiated at the funeral of Mr. Wicks last year, Tom H., Theodore, Iver J., Sherman, Tom S., and Willie Wicks.

[Julia Raymond portion omitted - see separate post.]
