PIONEER WOMAN PASSED AWAY
MRS. HAMMERSLAND HAD LIVED IN COMMUNITY OVER HALF CENTURY
Mrs. B. L. Hammersland, one of the older residents of the community, died at 1:40 o'clock Monday afternoon at her home a mile east and five and a quarter miles south of Roland. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the home and at 2:00 o'clock in Bergen church, with Rev. M. O. Sumstad officiating. Interment will be made in the Roland cemetery.
Mrs. Britha Hammersland (nee Hegland) was born December 7, 1856, at Skaanevik, Norway, her parents being Michael and Britha Hegland. She died at her home near Roland September 4, 1933, at the age of 76 years, 8 months and 27 days.
In 1882 she emigrated to America in company with her sister, Mrs. Lars Hegland, and Mr. Hegland, who had returned to Norway to get them. They arrived here June 20, 1882, and Mrs. Hammersland has lived in this community ever since.
She was married April 20, 1886, to B. L. Hammersland, who died October 1, 1922. Three children were born to this couple, one of whom died in infancy. The surviving children are Mrs. Fred Statler of Des Moines and Mrs. P. H. Martens of this place.
She is also survived by three stepchildren, Severt Hammersland of Clear Lake, Lars and Peter at home. Four stepchildren have died previously. There are 11 grandchildren, and one great grandchild. One step-grandchild, Mrs. Andrew Tjelmeland, was raised from infancy at the Hammersland home.
Mrs. Hammersland is the last member of a large family of children, most of whom lived and died in Norway. Those who came to America besides her were Mrs. Lars Hegland and Thor Hegland, both of whom lived in this community.
