John Olson Passes Away

Aged Citizen of This Place Passes Away at Home of Daughter at Marshalltown Last Monday Morning. Had Been Poorly for Several Years and End Had Long Been Expected

John Olson (Overhus) died at the home of his daughter at Marshalltown on Monday morning, October 24, 1910, from several months illness from dropsy. The deceased was born in Norway, Europe, 76 years ago in September and 48 years ago he came to Clinton county where he lived with his wife until 1867 when he moved with his family to Story County, buying the farm which he still owned northeast of town. He lived on the farm until about two years ago, when he was taken sick and since that time he has made his home with his daughter at Marshalltown. His wife died six years ago last spring. Four children are left to mourn his death, Ole J. Olson, of Clarinda, George J. Olson of Marshalltown, Nels J. Olson of this place and Mrs. Sam Swanson of Marshalltown. They were all present at his bedside when he passed away with the exception of Ole.

About two months ago, Mr. Olson became so poorly that he had to become confined to his bed and his decline has been steady until death came as a relief. Short funeral services were held from the Swanson home at Marshalltown by Rev. O. Qualen on Tuesday morning after which the remains were brought to Roland on the noon train. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from Bergen church, Rev. G. Smedal preaching the funeral sermon and the remains were laid to rest in the Roland cemetery beside his wife. The church was filled with the friends of the departed one, who wished to pay their last respects to the dead. The sorrowing ones are extended the sincere sympathy of their friends in the hour of their bereavement.

The deceased was a somewhat eccentric character, but had numerous friends and was a man who always looked on the brighter side of life and his death will be a source of regret to those with whom he associated.
