Maxine Virginia Hovick, 88, of Story City passed away Saturday, April 3, 2010 at Bethany Manor in Story City. Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 7th, at 1:30 p.m. at Elim Lutheran Church in Randall. Burial followed in the Story City Municipal Cemetery. There was a visitation of family and friends on Tuesday, April 6th from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Bethany Manor Chapel in Story City.

Maxine Hovick was born July 3, 1921 to Miles and Jeanette (Wierson) Thorson in Story City, Iowa. Maxine attended Story City High School. She married Milo Hovick on February 22, 1939 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They farmed a number of years in the Jewell, Randall and Roland areas.

In 1970 they moved to Branson, Missouri where she worked for 30 years in the candle shop at Silver Dollar City. She enjoyed her work at the shop, meeting and visiting with many people. She was very active in her church at St. Paul's Lutheran in Branson where she started a very successful Scandinavian luncheon. Maxine was also active in Elim Lutheran Church in Randall.

She enjoyed sewing, especially sewing baby quilts for her grandchildren. She loved entertaining her family and friends with her excellent cooking and baking skills.

Maxine moved back to Story City in September of 2000. Four years ago she moved to the assisted living at Cedar Place due to her failing health. Then on July 21, 2009 she moved over to Bethany Manor. There she met many new friends and enjoyed playing cards, working jig-saw puzzles, craft making, and all the various activities. Maxine loved playing in the bell choir.

She was so proud of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.

Survivors include her three daughters, Virginia (Charles) Egemo of Story City, Darlene Kane of Menlo, Iowa, and Lorna (Bill) Brennan of Emmetsburg, Iowa; one son Keith (Robin) Hovick of Ellsworth, Iowa; fifteen grandchildren; thirty-four great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; her sister Iona Lenning of Ames; her brother-in-law Donald Johnson of Story City; and many nieces and nephews.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Milo; her son Rodney Hovick; one great-grandchild, Jacob; her sister Mazel Johnson; and three brothers, Jefferies, Onel, and Arle.
