Killed by Lightning

Mrs. and Mrs. Aslak Hope received the sad message Monday that their son, Lars, whose home is at Worth, Minn., had been killed by lightning last Sunday at Dugdale, Minn. No other particulars have been received and the parents are nearly distracted over the sudden demise of their son.

Oscar Hope Brings Body of Dead Brother Home from Crookston, Minn. for Burial

The remains of Lars Hope, who was killed by lightning near Dugdale on Sunday, August 25, arrived here Monday afternoon, accompanied by his brother, Oscar Hope, who went up there a week ago Tuesday night. The funeral was held Tuesday from Salem church, Rev. Smedal performing the ceremony.

The particulars of the sad death of the young man is as follows: In company with a neighbor boy, A. F. Hillies, he was traveling overland from their home at Wirt, Minn., to the harvest fields in Dakota, and on Sunday, August 25, they were driving each a team near Dugdale, Minn., when a shower came up. His companion shouted to him and asked if they should stop in at the next place to which Hope answered yes, and directly afterwards the lightning struck them, killing Hope, and one horse and knocking Hillier and the other horses senseless. When Hillier came to, he ran over to Hope's wagon, only to find that his companion was dead, and his clothing scattered around for a distance of 100 feet. He had a pocket book containing $300 which was found 100 feet from the body. The coroner took the body to Crookston, and placed it in the care of an undertaker, no inquest being necessary, and the young man's parents at this place were notified by a message.

Considerable delay was occasioned by telegrams before Oscar Hope, a brother of deceased, left Tuesday evening bringing the corpse here on Monday for burial.

The deceased left here about eight years ago, and took an homestead near Wirt, Minn., and has been here only once since when he was here for a visit five years ago. He was 31 years of age and unmarried but leaves a father, mother, two brothers and two sisters to mourn his untimely death.
