Laurence Weigel, 91, of northeast Boone County, died Monday, April 19, 2010, at the home of his daughter in Boone. A funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 23, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, northwest of Gilbert. Burial will be in Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 22, at Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall streets in Boone, where a vigil service will be at 7 p.m. and the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m.

Laurence was born Nov. 18, 1918, in Boone County, the son of Ernest and Mary (McKenna) Weigel. He married Eileen Garvey in Boone Sept. 29, 1941. He farmed in Harrison Township in Boone County. In earlier years, he raised cows and pigs. He was a lifelong member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church and served as a board member. He also was a member of the Farm Bureau of Boone County and served as a director of Harrison Township No. 6 School. He enjoyed reading westerns and watching old television shows, especially Lawrence Welk and westerns.

He is survived by his wife, Eileen, of rural Ames; five sons, Paul Weigel and wife, Marlene, of Boone, Hugh Weigel and wife, Donna, of Story City, and Charles Weigel and wife, Diana, Patrick Weigel and wife, Sharon, and John Weigel, all of Ames; two daughters, Margaret Weigel, RSM of Cedar Rapids and Leah Weigel, of Ames; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Thomas Weigel; one daughter-in-law, Beverly Moorman Weigel; one great-granddaughter, Madison Weigel; and a brother, Francis Isidore Weigel.

Memorials may be given to the Sacred Heart School Tuition Fund or to the family to be used at their discretion.
