THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, April 13, 2010.

Neil E. “Ned” Disque died Friday, April 9, 2010, in Colorado Springs, Colo., at the age of 100. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, April 15, at Adams Funeral Home in Ames. A private graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, April 16, in Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Born March 10, 1910, Ned grew up in Burlington, where he graduated from Burlington High School before attending and graduating from Dartmouth College in 1932 with a bachelor’s degree in English and from the University of Missouri in 1933 with a journalism degree.

He was employed by Curtis Publishing Company in Chicago, then worked as a salesman in Albuquerque, N.M., and Burlington before serving as editor and reporter on newspapers in Fort Madison, Waterloo and Waverly.

During World War II, he served as a crewmember on a B-26 before attending Officer Candidate School and subsequently being assigned to the Southwest Pacific.

Following the war, he joined Iowa State University in 1947 as editor in the Cooperative Extension Services and thereafter served as editor and administrator in the University Information Service and Office of the Vice President for Information and Development. Following retirement in 1980, Ned and wife, Margaret, moved to Green Valley, Ariz., then relocated in the early 1990s to be near their son in Colorado Springs, Colo.

He was married in Ames in 1953 to Margaret Lowry, who survives, along with one son, Michael Disque (wife, Cherri Disque) in Colorado Springs.

During his life, he was active in a number of organizations including Ames Kiwanis Club, Phi Delta fraternity alumni groups and the Collegiate Methodist Church.
