THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, April 6, 2010.

Bernard Vinograde was born May 7, 1915, in Chicago, to Rose and James Vinograde. He lived there until 1926, when his family moved to a farm south of Albany, N.Y. In 1929, he moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., graduating from City College in 1937. In 1942, he received a doctorate degree from the University of Michigan. That same year, he married Ann Costikyan, and they shared 67 wonderful years together.

Bernard taught mathematics at the University of Wisconsin, Tulane University and at Iowa State University from 1945 to 1990. Having spent many summers in the southwestern United States, Ann and Bernard moved to Brian Head and St. George, Utah, in 1990.

He is survived by four children, Polly, Peter, Alice and Barbara; four granddaughters; and one great-granddaughter. He led a long and rewarding life. His family loved his wry sense of humor, practical wisdom and gracious modesty. Reflecting upon his life, he described himself succinctly: “In profession, he was a mathematician; in retirement, he was an environmentalist; in religion, he was a skeptic; and in politics, he was a liberal.”

Bernard died March 29, 2010, with Ann at his side. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends
