TJELMELAND DIED LAST WEDNESDAY

FUNERAL FOR HARDIN COUNTY RESIDENT HELD IN ZION CHURCH

Halvor Tjelmeland, a resident of Hardin county for over 30 years, died last Wednesday at his home seven miles northeast of Roland at the age of 68 years.

Halvor Tjelmeland was born May 18, 1864 in Skaanevik, Norway. His parents were Wier and Bertha Tjelmeland. He came to America in 1891. In the year 1896 he was united in marriage to Miss Belle Sorem, Rev. C. C. Holter performing the ceremony. For five years they lived on a farm north of Nevada, but in 1901 they moved to Hardin county on the farm which has since been their home. Their union was blessed with eight children, five boys and three girls, Martin of McCallsburg, Andrew of Nevada, Bertha (Mrs. Oscar Osmundson) of Radcliffe, Ward of Nevada, Birdella (Mrs. Charles Sampson) of Radcliffe, Harry, Violet and Tilmer living at home.

Mr. Tjelmeland began to ail seriously about four months ago. He sought medical aid, but nothing, it seemed, could be done to cure him of his maladies. Towards the end he failed rapidly, and Wednesday, December 14, he passed away, being 68 years, 6 months and 26 days old.

He was a quiet and friendly personality, a good citizen, a hard worker and good provider for his family, a helpful and respected neighbor, and a faithful and dependable member of Zion church.

Left to mourn his departure are: his wife Mrs. Belle Tjelmeland, the above mentioned eight children, four brothers, Wier of Story City, John of Jewell, Erick and Tjerand in Norway, also thirteen grandchildren.

The funeral was held Saturday, December 17. A brief devotional service was conducted at the home at 1:30. At 2:00 the services in church took place. The choir sang two songs. Mr. Randall Hatteberg gave a brief testimony and sang a solo. The services were in charge of the pastor of the Zion church, Rev. H. N. Bakke, who spoke in Norwegian on "Frelsen, Guds Verk," based on Ephesians 2:1-10, and in English, in connection with Ecclesiastics 7:204.

The church was filled with relatives and friends. The floral tributes were numerous. Some gave money for missions instead of flowers. The pall bearers were, Jim Hatteberg, Ole Jacobson, O. K. Johnson, Christ Sampson, Isaac Larson and Fred Lee. The remains were laid to rest in the Zion cemetery.

Among those from a distance in attendance at the funeral were Mrs. Stena Estenson and son Theodore of Morris, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Ole Frette of Indianola, Mrs. Gilchrist of Ames, Mr. and Mrs. T. O. Haaland of McCallsburg, Mr. and Mrs. Osmund Sorem of Marshalltown, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Allen and son of Nevada, Mrs. Vier Tjelmeland of Story City, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Chelma and John Chelma of Jewell.
