THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Friday, March 19, 2010.

Virginia Bell, 84, a former resident of Boone, passed away peacefully with her son by her side Saturday, March 13, 2010, in Fort Myers, Fla. It was a beautiful spring day with the sun shining bright. It seemed like she took one last breath and just didn’t take another.

Her wishes were to be cremated. A private graveside service will be held for family members at a later date at Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone.

Virginia was born June 19, 1925, in Nevada, the daughter of Ralph and Emza (Dawson Godwin) Samson. Growing up during the Great Depression, like for many, life was never easy and Virginia remembered standing in line as a child with her mother for food rations. During World War II, life was particularly hard with all four brothers serving in the armed forces leaving Virginia, her mother and her sister to care for the farm. Virginia was always willing to work hard. She will be most remembered for her smile and as a caregiver as she helped to take care of her husband who had declining health for many years and passed away in 1989; her sister and her beloved mother who also passed away in 1989.

She moved to Fort Myers, Fla., in November 2000 to be near her son. Virginia was residing at Manor Care Nursing Home in Fort Myers since 2005 after a stroke left her impaired. We want to take this opportunity to thank everyone at Manor Care and at Hope-Hospice for giving Virginia wonderful care during these past few years.

She is survived by her loving son, Larry and wife, Gayle Bell, of Fort Myers Beach, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 42 years, Wayne “Bud” Bell; four brothers, LaVerne, Harold, Richard “Buster,” and Kenneth; and a sister, Eloise Fry.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Virginia Bell to Hope Hospice of Southwest Florida, 9470 HealthPark Circle, Fort Myers, Fla. 33908.
