THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, March 24, 2010.

Danny Gene Whipple, 53, went to be with his Heavenly Father Monday, March 22, 2010. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 26, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City. Burial will be in Story City Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 25, at Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Dan was born Nov. 8, 1956, in Ames, to Paul and Marilyn (Matson) Whipple. He graduated from Roland-Story High School in 1975. He married Lori Hall June 25, 1977, at Salem Lutheran Church in Roland. They were blessed with three children, Trent (Crystal), of Roland, Tanner (Katie), of Pleasant Hill, and Laurel (Brandon) Leeman, of Roland.

He was employed at Iowa State University for 28 years with a career in carpentry. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City. He was an avid antique collector, Roland-Story Norsemen and ISU Cyclone supporter, and enjoyed watching his kids grow into fine young adults. He also enjoyed working with wood, including building many fine pieces of furniture that still are enjoyed by his family today. Most of all, he enjoyed surrounding himself with family and friends.

His positive outlook on life, despite having a rare chronic disease, was an inspiration to many through his positive attitude and selflessness. He always had a smile on his face and thoroughly enjoyed company. Despite having difficulties walking, he made sure he did so whenever he could. These qualities and contagious personality brought joy to the lives of everyone around him. To know him was to know a truly kind person.

He is survived by his parents; his wife and children; three siblings, Terry (Jenny), of Tomah, Wis., Dion (Brenda), of Story City, and Tami (Tim) Marienau, of Roland; and 13 nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Immanuel Lutheran Church or Riverside Bible Camp.

Soderstrum Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
