Mary M. Hakes, 85, of Nevada, died Tuesday, March 9, at Story County Senior Care. Memorial services are pending with Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada.

Mary Mildred Hakes, 85, of Nevada, died on Tuesday March 9, 2010, at Story County Senior Care. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 15, at Memorial Lutheran Church, 701 11th St., Nevada, with Pastor Myron Herzberg officiating. Burial of the cremains will be in Nevada Municipal Cemetery.

Mary was born on Jan. 9, 1925, in Nevada to Sam and Margaret (Mathison) Ugolini. She was a 1943 Nevada High School graduate. On July 7, 1946, she married Paul C. Hakes at Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada. She was employed as a receptionist/teller at both State Bank and Nevada National Bank. She retired from Story County as a bailiff for the lower courts. She was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church, Mary’s Circle, PEO and numerous bridge clubs. Her passions were playing bridge and boating.

She is survived by two sons, Mark (Marlene) Hakes, of Nevada, and David (Carolyn) Hakes, of Cedar Falls; one son-in-law, Donald Manning, of Granger; six grandchildren, Valerie Craven, Tony Hakes, Matt Leu, Morgan Parkhurst, Madelyn Hakes and Rachel Hakes; 10 great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Nastya, and Tatyana Craven, Justin and Christian Leu, Rachal Parkhurst, Tyler, Kaity, Kassy, and Cooper Hakes; and a nephew Gary (Sally) Scott, of Nebraska.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul, on Oct. 9, 2007, one daughter, Chris Manning, on March 13, 2000; and one sister Wanda Scott.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 14, at Memorial Lutheran Church, 701 11th St., Nevada.

A memorial fund has been established in Mary’s name at the church.

Chet Ryan Mortuary has been entrusted with Mary and her family.
