THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, February 9, 2010.

Harry William Hale, 89, of Ames and Naples, Fla., died Friday, Feb. 5, 2010, in Naples of cancer. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, at Curtis Funeral Home in Winslow, Ind., with a graveside service at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Winslow.

He was born Sept. 15, 1920, in Winslow, Ind. He grew up in Winslow and attended Purdue University in Lafayette, Ind., earning a bachelor’s degree in 1942, a master’s degree in 1949, and a doctorate degree in electrical engineering in 1953. Early in his career, he taught at Purdue and Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich. In 1968, he joined the faculty of Iowa State University in electrical and computer engineering and was there until he retired in 1991. He published many papers in the areas of electrical and computer engineering.

He entered the Army in 1942, serving with Patton’s 3rd Army in Germany. He left the Army in 1947, attaining the rank of captain.

He was first married to Anna Mae (Ward) Hale in 1946 and had one child, Charles D. Hale. Anna passed away on Christmas Day 1984. He married Margery O. (Bornmueller) Hale Sept. 7, 1985. He continued to live in Ames with Margery following his retirement, but also enjoyed spending the winter months in Naples, Fla.

He was a member of the professional organization IEEE, the Ames Noon Rotary Club, Moose Lodge, Ames Elk Lodge 1626 and American Legion Chapter 37. He also enjoyed playing bridge and was a member of bridge clubs in Ames and Naples.

He is survived by his wife, Margery; his daughter-in-law, Carol Hale, of Alden; Margery’s children, Alan and Sally Bornmueller, of Greer, S.C., Gary and Colleen Bornmueller, of Des Moines, and Lisa (Bornmueller) and Antonio Dias, of Downey, Calif.; one sister, Esther Jacobs, of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Patsy Hynick, Brian Romine, Julie (Bornmueller) Birello, and Bryan Bornmueller; great-grandson, Mikel Hynick; and many loving nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Anna; one son, Charles; his parents; and four sisters.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
