THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Saturday, February 6, 2010.

Harlan Blockhus, 84, of Northfield, Minn., died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010, at Northfield Retirement Community. The memorial service was Friday, Feb. 5.

Harlan was born March 11, 1925, in Elgin, to Michael and Olga (Gilbertson) Blockhus. After graduating from high school, Harlan studied a year at Iowa State University. He graduated from Luther College in 1951. At Luther, he met Eleanor London and they were married in 1952. Harlan graduated from Luther Seminary in 1954.

He served parishes in Armstrong, Des Moines and Waverly. In 1978 until his retirement in 1990, Harlan worked in development at Lutheran Social Services and served as chaplain for the Beloit Children’s Home in Ames. Harlan and Eleanor chose to spend their retired years in Northfield, Minn., starting in 1996. Harlan enjoyed woodworking, rosemaling and making lefse with his wife. Harlan and Eleanor moved into the Northfield Care Center in late 2005.

Harlan is survived by his wife, Eleanor; his four daughters, Julie Larson (David), of Rochester, Minn., Joan Blockhus-Morgan (Bill), of Sierra Vista, Ariz., Jane Blockhus (Henry Emmons), of Northfield, Minn., and Jill, of Washington, D.C.; and six grandchildren, Kirstin, Ben and Jon Larson, Eric and Mark Emmons, and Will Morgan.

In lieu of flowers, donations could be made to Beloit Children’s Center/Lutheran Services of Iowa, St. John’s Lutheran Church or the Northfield Retirement Community-Chaplain Endowment.
