Rick Cordes, a beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away on January 30 from complications of a stroke. Rick was born in Marshalltown to Mildred and Stanley Cordes. He joined the Army in 1971 and served in Vietnam. He was awarded a National Defense Service Medal and a Vietnam Service Medal.

Rick worked at WOI-TV and then as a computer and network support specialist at Iowa State University for 31 years. He had planned to retire on January 29, 2010.

Rick was very active in woodworking and camera clubs. He built his house and used his woodworking talents to build many things including his grandchildren’s crib, beds, and other furnishings for his family and friends. His ability to capture special moments made him a fixture at his grandchildren’s sporting events, parties, and programs, always with a camera in hand.

He married Vicki Cordes on July 5, 1980 at their home. The couple has two children, Rob (Julie) Hannusch of West Des Moines, and Shelly (Doug) Olsan of Huxley, and five grandsons Zach and Noah Hannusch, Max, Jack and Rex Olsan. Rick’s mother, Midge, and his two brothers, Steve (Deb) and Mike reside in Marshalltown. Rick was also blessed by a close friendship with Kelly, Deanne and Addisen Popp.
