THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, December 29, 2009.

Anne Elizabeth Easton Martin was born Dec. 11, 1941, in Waterloo, to Frank Easton and Matyne Hogan Easton. In 1949, her family moved to Ames. Matyne was an ISU faculty member in library instruction, and Frank was a civil engineer. One of Frank’s works is the earthen dam that created the pond at McFarland Park.

Anne attended primary school at St. Cecilia’s and graduated from Ames High School in 1959. She completed a bachelor’s degree in economics at ISU in 1963 and married David Michael Martin in May of the same year. Anne and Dave had two sons, Michael (Hogan) Easton Martin in 1964, and David Michael Martin Jr. in 1965. The family settled in Ames in 1971 after a few years in the East (Chelmsford, Mass., and Pittsburgh, Pa.).

She worked with H&R Block and the Pasley Singer law firm before joining the staff at ISU where she was assistant director for personnel and finance at the Academic Computation Center until she retired in summer 1999.

She enjoyed gathering with family and playing bridge with friends and was a longstanding member of the Serendipity Book Club. In 2003, she got the “house in the woods” that she had always dreamed of and spent several enjoyable years tending the garden and yard beneath a canopy of mature oak, hickory and walnut trees at the edge of Munn Woods. She was a longtime supporter of organizations, including the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union.

She survived breast cancer in 1988 and again in 2006. Lung cancer diagnosed in August 2008 took her from us on Christmas Day 2009. She died at home with her family, who will miss her every day. The family thanks Homeward Hospice and the many friends who supported us on her final journey.

She is survived by her husband, David, and her son, Hogan, both of Ames; son, David Jr., of Des Plaines, Ill.; and two brothers, John Easton, of Minneapolis, and Bill Easton, of Rockford, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank in 1964 and Matyne in 1979; and two sisters, Marjorie (Angus) in 1978 and Jane (Ege) in 1981.

An ecumenical service in her memory will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Ames.

In lieu of flowers, she would have appreciated donations to Ames Public Library Foundation or Iowa Public Radio.
