THE NEVADA JOURNAL, Nevada, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, December 17, 2009.

Vivian Smith, age 89, a long-time resident of Randall, passed away Saturday, December 12, 2009 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, surrounded by her family and an almost continuous parade of friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 17, 2009 at St. Cecilia Catholic church in Ames. Burial is at St. James Cemetery in Colo, Iowa. Visitation was Wednesday evening at Becker Funeral Home in Jewell, with a scripture service. Memorial gifts may be given to the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

Vivian was born on April 11, 1920 at the family home in Moulton, Iowa to Charles and Irene (Hanson) Davis.

Vivian and her husband, Raymond G. Smith farmed several farms in Central Iowa following their marriage in Colo on October 19, 1943, finally settling in Randall where Ray worked until he retired from the Farmer’s Cooperative in 1979. Up until Raymond’s death in 1997, they spent several winters in Arizona with family.

Vivian’s children and grandchildren span the country, from Arizona to Pennsylvania, and she served as the focal point for holidays and vacations, traveling to Montana as recently as September 2009 to take part in a family house-razing project.

Vivian was active in Good Shepherd Parish in Jewell, IA and most recently at Saint Cecilia’s in Ames. Vivian was an expert seamstress whose talents ranged from custom clothing to beautiful quilts.

Vivian is survived by her daughter, Marilyn of Randall, sons, Charles (Annette) of Boone and John (Pat) of Fort Worth, Texas and daughter Meg Bryan of Anaconda, Montana and daughters, Irene and Marcella of Tucson, Arizona and daughter Marie (Alan) of Benson, Arizona, grandsons, Jim (Cheryl) Goforth of Pennsylvania, Robert Otts of Arizona and Chris and Allen (Kristin) Smith of Texas and several great grandchildren. Also surviving is Vivian’s sister, Annabelle Henze, of State Center, Iowa. Pre-deceased are Vivian’s brothers, Carl and Hans.
