THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Saturday, December 19, 2009.

Steven L. Madsen, 60, died peacefully at home surrounded by his wife and children on Dec.18, 2009.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames with burial to follow at Ames Municipal Cemetery. A visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 28, at the chapel.

Steve was born on Feb. 24, 1949, in Ames to Orville and Virginia Madsen. After graduating from Ames High School in 1967, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and was stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City, S.D., from 1967 to 1971. He married his high school sweetheart Diana Dowell on June 21, 1969, and graduated in 1975 from Iowa State University with a degree in Industrial Technology. In 1979, he began a 30-year career at Sauer-Danfoss, from which he retired in January 2009.

Steve was a bowler on the Classic League at 20th Century Bowling for many years. However, his greatest joy was flying. He was an active member of the Central Iowa Aeromodelers and whether flying RC planes, reading books on World War II, putting together models, watching the birds in his backyard or just looking up in the sky, flight was never far from his mind.

He was also a patient teacher who loved sharing his passion with all who would listen. His children and many others grew up with countless homemade parachute men, paper airplanes, and balsa wood gliders.

He will be remembered by his wife of 40 years, Diana; his children, Rebecca, Pamela and David; his sisters Judy (Kenny) Gammon, Jann Russo and Angie Cox; his sisters- and brothers-in-law Dennis (Sue) Dowell, Marilyn (Dan) Settle, Janet (John) Lott, Norma Dowell (Kathy Kriegler), Phillip (Nora) Dowell; his mother-in-law, Olene Dowell; and many loving nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mary Madsen.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Academy of Model Aeronautics education fund to help spread Steve’s love of flying to children.

Condolences may be sent to www.stevensmemorialchapel.com .

The next time you hear a plane fly by, look up; it’s what Steve would do.
