David V. Nelson, of Randall, died Monday, April 5, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames of complications from a stroke he suffered March 26. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 8, at Elim Lutheran Church in Randall.

Dave was born to Arvin and Hazel (Helvig) Nelson on May 25, 1944, in Ames. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Petri Lutheran Church in Story City. He was a 1962 graduate of Story City High School, attended Iowa State University and graduated from Dunwoody Industrial Institute in Minneapolis. He was a Vietnam veteran, serving with the U.S. Air Force from 1966 to 1970. Over the years, he had been employed by A.J. Nelson and Sons, Inc., Bournes, Record Printing, Manpower, and most recently, PUTCO Manufacturing in Story City. He enjoyed NASCAR racing and doing jigsaw puzzles with his mother and the others in the Scandia West condos. He was involved with scouting from Cub Scouts through Explorer Scouts. He was past commander of Story City American Legion and a district officer.

He is survived by his mother, Hazel Nelson of Story City; one sister and brother-in-law, Sue and Marv Braland of Randall; one nephew, Scott Braland and his wife, Kami, of Aurora, Ill.; one niece, Anne Braland of Story City; and his uncle and aunt, Andy and Trudy Nelson of Story City.

He was preceded in death by his father; grandparents; aunts and uncles.

Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, with family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Soderstrum-Larson Funeral Home in Story City.

Memorials may be made to the Story City American Legion, Post 59, in Story City.

Soderstrum-Larson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
