THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Friday, December 11, 2009.

Doris Bernadine Speckeen, 82, of Singer Island, Fla., died Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009, of complications following surgery for a subdural hematoma. A Florida memorial service was Tuesday, Dec. 8, in Palm Beach, Fla. A memorial service will be held in Iowa in the spring.

She was born and grew up in Ortonville, Minn., graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College, and married the love of her life, Loren G. “Spike” Speckeen, in 1950. She taught high school French and business in Robbinsdale, Minn., preceding the birth of her two children. In 1963, she and Spike moved to Nevada, where they lived for more than 25 years and together built two agribusinesses, Speckeen Construction and Nevada Distributing. Following retirement in 1990, the Speckeens moved to Florida.

Doris lived her life with grace, beauty, dignity and humility. She had many interests including travel, boating and golfing. She was involved in the P.E.O. sisterhood and enjoyed helping her chapter give away scholarships. She was a terrific cook and loved to entertain, which she did with both style and ease. She always kept abreast of political issues and loved lively discussions involving current events.

Her strong faith was evident throughout her life; she taught Sunday school and quietly served the needs of many friends and neighbors without the expectation of accolades. The most important priority in her life, however, was always family.

Left to cherish her memories, in addition to her husband, are her children, Stephanie Ann (Russel) Campbell and Jay David (Sharon Varallo) Speckeen; and grandchildren, Corinne Campbell, Brent Campbell and Dorothy Varallo-Speckeen; as well as sisters, Voy (Rod) Brunker, Gail (Chuck) Murphey and Sharon Welch; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Otto Bernard and Dorothy Amanda Jacobson.

Those wishing to make donations may do so to the Doris Speckeen Memorial Fund, in care of Stephanie Campbell, 3480 Lythrum Way, Minnetrista, Minn., 55364; charities to be determined at a later date.
