THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Friday, November 20, 2009.
Sharon Kay Helling, 50, of Carroll, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009, at her home. Mass of the Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll, with the Rev. Timothy Schott as celebrant. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, in Story City Municipal Cemetery.
Friends may call after 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, at Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll, where there will be a Christian wake service at 7 p.m.
Born Nov. 29, 1958, in Ames, Sharon was the daughter of Junior and Shirley (Severeide) Thrasher. She grew up in the Ames-Gilbert area and graduated from Gilbert High School in 1977. She then attended Iowa State University where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. She married Leon B. Helling June 20, 1981, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Ames.
The Helling family has lived in Carroll for the past 16 years. During this time, She was a substitute school teacher in the Carroll School District. She was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll and the Iowa State Alumni Association. In her spare time, she enjoyed attending Iowa State basketball games, tailgating for ISU football games, reading and spending time with friends and family. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother and friend.
She is survived by her husband, Leon Helling; daughter, Jaclyn Helling, of Lawrence, Kan., and her fiancé, Cody Stamm, of Des Moines; daughter, Allison Helling, of Ankeny; her father, Junior Thrasher, of Ames; her grandmother, Evvie Severeide, of Story City; her mother and father-in-law, Richard and Ann Helling, of New Hampton; sister, Sue Price and her husband, Buddy, of Gilbert; brother-in-law, John Helling and his wife, Linda, of Harlan; sister-in-law, Bernadette Christoph and her husband, Dave, of New Hampton; brother-in-law, Dale Helling and his wife, Joelene, of West Des Moines; brother-in-law, Larry Helling and his wife, Jan, of Marion; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Shirley Thrasher; and her grandfather, Lester Severeide.
