FUNERAL HELD SUNDAY AT AMES BURIAL MADE AT THE AMES CEMETERY

Mrs. Sarah Hughes, for the past 35 years a resident of the Kelley and Napier communities, passed away Friday morning, March 29th, after an illness extending over a period of several years. She was 77 years of age at the time of her death. She was the mother of Mrs. Ralph Carroll of southeast of here, and Charles Hughes of northwest of Madrid, and Guy Hughes of Napier and Kelley communities.

FUNERAL SUNDAY

The funeral services for Mrs. Hughes were held Sunday afternoon from the homes near Kelley with Rev. C. H. Miller of Luther in charge. Interment was made in the cemetery at Ames. Pall bearers were R. P. Toll, Lewis Stensland, E. Adams, Morris Rathbun, Melvin Kitchen and Col. Robinson.

BORN AT STORY CITY

Sarah Sowers was born at Story City, Iowa, October 10, 1857, the daughter of George and Margaret Sowers. She spent a few years at the scene of her birth and then moved to the Pleasant Grove community, a few miles north of Ames. Here she grew to womanhood, and in the year of 1877 she became the bride of William Hughes.

To this union were born three children, all of them living. The family lived in the Pleasant Grove community until 1900 when they moved to the farm near Kelley, and with the exception of a few years time they have since made their home there.

Mrs. Hughes was of a strong character and but when a small girl united with the Methodist church at Pleasant Grove. Following her re-location to the Kelley community she united with the Congregational church there and was a member of that church at the time of her death. She was a resident of this section of the state when it was in its pioneer stages and through her entire life witnessed many changes in the country. She was of the brave pioneer spirit and her presence on this earth will be greatly missed by the ones near and dear to her.

She is also survived by two brothers, Elmer of Ames, and Chas. of Grand Junction, Colorado. One sister, Mrs. Geo. K. Young of Primghar, also survives, and eight grandchildren.
