Ronald C. Welch, 81, of Ames, died Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at Riverside Manor.
Arrangements are pending with Adams Funeral Home and Cremation Service.

Ronald C. Welch, 81, beloved husband of Joan E. Welch., passed away Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, due to complications of Alzheimer’s disease. The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at Memorial Lutheran Church of Ames, with visitation one hour prior to the service.
Ron was born Nov. 16, 1928, in Fort Madison, the only child of the late Iris and Clarence Welch. He served with distinction in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1946-48. Following his service to country, he attended Iowa State University where he graduated with a degree in civil engineering. He subsequently joined the Iowa Department of Transportation in Ames as a civil engineer in bridge design, a position he held for 39 years.
He met his beloved wife, Joan, while attending ISU and they were married on June 13, 1953. They have three children, Michael, of Berlin, Germany, Linda, of Portland, Ore., and David, of Frisco, Colo. He was an avid outdoor enthusiast who enjoyed camping, canoeing and hiking. He also was an active volunteer for many years as a Boy Scout troop leader as well as in a variety of other civic organizations, including a long dedication to Memorial Lutheran Church of Ames. He had a love for his family, books, model ship building, jazz and all things Irish.
He is survived by his wife, three children and three grandchildren, Camille, Simon and Charlotte Welch. His dignity, stories and sense of humor will be greatly missed by all touched by his smile.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to Memorial Lutheran Church of Ames or the Alzheimer’s Association-Greater Iowa Chapter based in Des Moines.
Adams Funeral Home and Cremation Service is assisting the family with the arrangements.
