THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, November 3, 2009.
George Warren Burnett, 88, of Nevada, passed away Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, at Story County Long Term Care in Nevada. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, at Nevada First Christian Church. Burial will be in Nevada Municipal Cemetery.
Visitation with the family will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, at Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada.
George was born Feb. 23, 1921, to R.J. (Bob) and Greta (Huddlestun) Burnett. He had four sisters and two brothers. He graduated from McCallsburg High School in 1938, and worked in the electrical business and on the family farm. He went to California in the early 1940s, working at Douglas Aircraft. Upon his return to Iowa, he continued to assist with the family farm and in electrical work, working for Post and Corbin prior to acquiring his electrical business in 1949. He owned Burnett Electric, working with his brothers and other employees until 1962, when he began working at the Iowa State University Physical Plant’s electrical department until he retired in 1984. After his ISU retirement, he worked for the Regency Home in Nevada for five years.
On June 12, 1949, he married Betty Salmon and had three sons. He was a volunteer firefighter on the Nevada Fire Department for 22 years, was a 50-year Mason and a 50-year member of the Eastern Star. He belonged to Nevada First Christian Church Disciples of Christ, was active on the Building Committee and in assisting with ongoing church maintenance.
He is survived by his wife, Betty, of Nevada; three sons and their families, Keith and Barbara Burnett, of Nevada, Lynn and Kim Burnett, of Ames, and David and Wendi Burnett, of Oklahoma City; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews, and countless friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and two brothers.
George loved his family and friends and enjoyed their time together.
Bacon Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
