THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, October 14, 2009.

Robert M. Muir, 81, of St. Cloud, Minn., died Monday, Oct. 12, 2009, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Sauk Rapids, Minn. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, at Grace United Methodist Church in St. Cloud, Minn., with the Rev. John Praetorius officiating. Burial will be in North Star Cemetery in St. Cloud, Minn.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, at Benson Funeral Home in St. Cloud, Minn., and one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.

Robert was born March 20, 1928, in Chicago, to Peter Alexander and Clara (Crispin) Muir. He married Kathleen Lucas June 22, 1952, in Bedford. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Benner.

He was a professor at Iowa State University for 20 years, employed by Honeywell in Plymouth, Minn., for 10 years and MIT Research Group in Massachusetts from 1991 until his retirement in December 1995.

He was a member of BETA Fraternity at Iowa State and a member of Grace United Methodist Church. He was one of the first high school athletes in the country to break the two-minute barrier in the half-mile run. He also was active and competitive in golf, racquetball and cross country skiing. He was a very gifted individual who always put family first.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Muir, of St. Cloud, Minn.; one son, Jon (Cathy) Muir, of St. Cloud, Minn.; one daughter, Mary Kay (Chip) Anderson, of Omaha, Neb.; and five grandchildren, Ben, Jonathan and Michael Anderson, and Grayson and Thomas Muir.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Don Muir.

Memorials are preferred.
