THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, October 1, 2009.
Ila F. Smith, 94, of Eastern Star Home in Boone, died Monday, Sept. 28, 2009, in Boone. Graveside committal services will be at a later date in Garden of Memories Cemetery in Waterloo.
Ila Frances was born Aug. 23, 1915, in Laurens, the daughter of Albert A. and Mary E. (Craig) Bunch. She graduated from Lester High School and then graduated from a business college in Des Moines. She married Leo Smith May 17, 1941, in Sioux Rapids. The couple moved to Waterloo in 1948, where she was employed as a teacher’s aide with the Waterloo Public Schools. Upon retirement, the couple moved to Pine River, Minn., for 25 years. Ila moved to Ames and resided at Green Hills Retirement Community before moving to Eastern Star Home in Boone.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Waterloo and Pine River United Methodist Church in Pine River, Minn. She enjoyed sewing, gardening and fishing.
She is survived by one son, Ronald C. (Jackie) Smith, of Ames; one daughter, Karen (Tom) Brindley, of Alpena Mich.; grandchildren, Nathan (Amy) Smith, of West Des Moines, Amy Jo (Bill) McGregor, of Plano, Texas, Sarah (Marty) Bauer, of Des Moines, and Kaye, Anna and Thomas Brindley, all of Alpena, Mich.; and two great-granddaughters, Jocelyn and Evelyn Smith, of West Des Moines.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leo; one son, Royce; three sisters, Elvira, Dorothy and Vernal; and one brother, Clifford.
