THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, September 15, 2009.
, 80, of Bella Vista, Ark., and formerly of Ames, died Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center in Rogers, Ark. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, at the Bella Vista Cemetery Columbarium.

He was born Oct. 17, 1928, in Atlantic, to Charles Virgil Owen and Marguerite Darrow Owen. He was raised and primarily educated in Atlantic, and graduated from Linn Grove High School in 1944. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944 and was honorably discharged in 1946. He attended Simpson College in Indianola and earned a bachelor’s degree in 1952. He married Joanna Crawford Nov. 27, 1949, in Griswold. He began working at Iowa State College as a research metallurgist with Ames Laboratory, United States Department of Energy, retiring in 1988 to Bella Vista, Ark. He was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega national fraternity, the Ames Junior Chamber of Commerce, the American Society of Metals, a former Exalted Ruler of the Elks and was a Cub and Boy Scout director and volunteer. He also loved hunting, fishing and golfing.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joanna, of Bella Vista, Ark.; three sons, Dr. Micheal D. K. Owen (Gail Kohlbeck), of Ames, Gary Charles Owen (Rebecca Tesdall), of Spirit Lake, and Jeffrey Stephen Owen, of Bloomington, Ind.; one daughter, Michelle Susan Taylor (David Taylor), of Johnson, Kan.; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Arrangements are by the Bella Vista Funeral Home and Crematory, 2258 Forest Hills Blvd., Bella Vista, AR, 72715.
