THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Friday, September 11, 2009.

Carol Josephine Skjordal, 69, of Ames, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. A celebration of her life will be Monday, Sept. 14, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames. The family will greet friends from noon until the service at 2 p.m. Inurnment will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Carol Skjordal was born Nov. 20, 1939, in Grinnell, to Robert Ralph and Mary Jane (Ellett) Rickard. She graduated as the salutatorian with the Gilbert High School class of 1958. She attended medical technician school in Minneapolis, where she met her future husband. She married Gerald “Jerry” Skjordal Aug. 29, 1959, in Watervliet, Mich. They recently celebrated their 50th anniversary.

She loved cooking, arranging flowers (she had an incredible green thumb), bird watching, knitting, oil painting, and most of all her family and extended family. She taught Sunday school, babysat for over 50 children and was a Cub Scout den mother for a number of years.

She worked at Van Voorhis Greenhouse, and for many years was employed at Iowa State University, where she worked her way up to manager of the custodial staff. While working at the university, she also was an extremely successful Realtor with Better Homes and Gardens, for which she was recognized for selling more than $1 million worth of real estate.

She is survived by her husband, Jerry, of Ames; three sons, Ken (Lynn), of Story City, John (Edna), of Gilbert, and Paul (Bonnie), of Gilbert; one daughter, Katy (David) Skjordal-Twine, of Dallas, Ore.; eight grandchildren, Paul R., Adangia, Joe, Mindi, Amy, Jerry, Lucas and Jossie; two great-grandchildren, Anthony and Sarah; two sisters, Roberta (Dick) Verwers, of Gladbrook, and Nancy Hose, of Thayne, Wyo.; two brothers, Marty Rickard, of Rockwell City, and Mike (Nancy) Rickard, of Traer; a “great” sister, Janice Rickard, of Pella; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and many wonderful friends, who will all miss her dearly.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
