THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, August 27, 2009.

Marvin Brown, 81, of Nevada, died Monday, Aug. 24, 2009, in Nevada. He had lived in the Story County area for 30 years. A memorial service was at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, at First Christian Church in Nevada, followed by a luncheon and opportunity to visit with the family. Burial will be Friday, Aug. 28, in Benton.

Marvin Brown was born July 8, 1928, in Ringgold County, to Walter Lee and Aldah Waggoner Brown. He married Leona Bucy Dec. 24, 1949, in Benton. The couple had four children, Judy and husband, Rick Lehman, of Glenwood, Marvina Williams, of Salt Lake City, Utah, Dale Brown, of Nevada, and Nancy and husband, Steve Qvale, of Ames.

His greatest joy in retirement was being grandfather and teasing his seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was known for his good sense of humor and loved to share a good story. He also enjoyed cars and often was heard to ask, “How much do you think that car is worth?” He played baseball in his youth and was known for his prowess at batting both left and right handed. As a retired farmer, he loved the land and being outdoors. He also enjoyed playing cards.

He is survived by his wife, Leona; children, Judy, Marvina, Dale and Nancy; four brothers, Dwain Brown, of Pleasant Hill, Randall Brown, of Mount Ayr, Arlan and wife, Linda Brown, of Indianola, and Gale Brown, of Neola; and three sisters, LaRetta and husband, George Novak, Sharon and husband, David Robison, of Altoona, and Reta and husband, Larry Freihage, of Ellston.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Carroll Brown; and one sister, Joy Brown.

Bacon Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
