Elena Marie Walters, age 80, passed away July 4, 2009 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, IA from complications due to lengthy illnesses. Visitation and Rosary for Elena was held at Fredregill Funeral Home in Zearing, IA on July 7, where the family greeted friends and neighbors. Funeral services were held the following day, July 8, at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church in Zearing. Following the services Elena was laid to rest next to her husband, James, in Lincoln Township Cemetery, Zearing.

Elena (Howard) Walters, daughter of Charles and Elsie (Tagatoff) Howard, was born May 4, 1929, in rural Toledo. She had three brothers Bernard Howard, Rolland Howard of San Mateo, CA and Francis Howard. Three sisters Loretta Wheelock of Zearing, Lucy Fisher of Ceresco, NE and Mary Lou Blayney of Seattle, WA. She went to a rural school for two years, then moved to St. Anthony, IA where she attended and graduated from Zearing High School. During her high school years, Elena participated in several activities, she especially enjoyed basketball, and continued to enjoy it into her later years.

James Walters and Elena Howard were married February 11, 1947, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in St. Anthony. From this union they had three children and six grandchildren. Jennifer (Kenton) Woster of New Providence, IA and their two sons, Travis (Kristin) Woster of Zearing and Grant Woster of Tempe, AZ. Harold (Diane Pascuzzi) Walters and their two daughters, Hillary (Austin) Toot of Ames and Shelby Walters of Zearing. Colette (Dave) Haaland of Nevada, IA and their two daughters, Rachel Haaland and Kati Haaland both of Nevada.

Elena, and her husband Jim, were longtime members of St. Gabriel's Catholic Church in Zearing. She spent over 60 years living and working on their farm northeast of Zearing and also worked many years as a nurse's aide at Colonial Manor in Zearing. Her greatest enjoyments in life were her grandchildren.

Elena was preceded in death by her husband, James; parents, Charles and Elsie; and two brothers, Bernard and Francis.
