THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, August 11, 2009.

Melvin Eugene Tomlinson, 85, of Des Moines, died Thursday, Aug. 6, 2009, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. He had been a resident of Norwalk Regency Care Center at the time of his death. Graveside services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, in Nevada Municipal Cemetery. Open visitation was from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada.

Melvin was born Aug. 11, 1923 in Freeborn, Minn., the son of Charles and Meda (Thomas) Tomlinson, and raised in Cambridge. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a gunnery instructor. He had worked as an inspector for Delavan Manufacturing. He married Valora Jean Hoel July 1, 1956. She preceded him in death in 2000. He was a member of First United Methodist of Nevada and Cambridge Masonic Lodge.

He is survived by one brother, Tom Tomlinson, of Sioux City; one sister, Ruth Knaack, of Phoenix, Iowa; one brother-in-law, Rex (Judy) Hoel, of Nevada; and four sisters-in-law, Patty Olson, of Webster City, Donna Sandmeier, of McCallsburg, Naomi Tomlinson, of Huxley, and Dorothy Tomlinson, of Spanish Fork, Utah.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and three brothers, Paul, Leslie and Rex.

Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada is in charge of arrangements.
