THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Friday, August 7, 2009.

Elisabeth Karen (Lisa) Elbert, 35, of Ames, died of cancer Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. A celebration of Lisa’s life will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Ames.

Lisa was born Dec. 1, 1973, in Bonn, Germany, to Stephen and Carol Elbert. The family moved to Ames in 1975, and Lisa grew up close to her grandparents. She attended Laurel Tree Montessori Preschool and Meeker Elementary School. After graduating from Ames High School in 1992, Lisa moved to Buckeburg, Germany to spend a year attending German high school while living with the von Meding family.

From 1993 to 1997, Lisa attended Carleton College in Northfield, Minn., where she had great fun, developed wonderful friendships, worked as a student photographer and graduated cum laude. She went on to complete two master’s degrees at the University of Minnesota, one in American history and one in applied linguistics. In 2007, she moved to Ames to begin work on a Ph.D. in applied linguistics at Iowa State University.

She enjoyed so many things: photography, nature, calligraphy, the Society for Creative Anachronisms, “Lord of the Rings,” Dave Barry, Garrison Keillor, Discworld, Transformers, Civil War re-enacting, spinning, weaving, knitting, writing, collecting antiques, dumpster-diving, traveling, and studying languages. She was passionate about the Dakota culture and made a significant contribution to the teaching of the Dakota language. Lisa loved her family, friends, and pet cockatiel, Lori.

Lisa is survived by her mother, Carol Elbert, of Ames; father, Stephen Elbert and his wife, Vanda Glezakou, of Richland, Wash.; grandmother, Evelyn Elbert, of Ankeny; sister, Dr. JC Burcham and JC’s husband, Rob, of Overland Park, Kan.; sister, Ourania-Maria Glezakou-Elbert, of Richland, Wash.; nephew, Jack Robert Francis Burcham, of Overland Park, Kan.; aunts and uncles, Karen and Gary Lewis, of Bradenton Fla., Gary and Sandy Haupt, of Cranston R.I., Joan and Gary Greiner, of Ames, David and Amy Elbert, of Des Moines, Cathy Smith, of Ankeny, and Jack and Irene Elbert, of Cedar Falls; and numerous cousins.

She was preceded in death by grandparents, Robert and Velma Haupt; grandfather, Willis Elbert; and uncle, Elliott Haupt.

The family is grateful to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, McFarland Clinic, Mary Greeley Medical Center and Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. At every stage, staff cared for Lisa with skill and kindness.

Donations in Lisa’s memory may be made to Israel Family Hospice House or to the charity of your choice.

Adams Funeral Home and Cremation Service is assisting the family with arrangements.
