THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, July 23, 2009.

Ethel Etta Avery, 99, of Aplington, died Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at Maple Manor Village in Aplington of natural causes. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, July 24, at Aplington Baptist Church, with burial in Pleasant View Cemetery in Aplington. Visitation will be an hour before services Friday at the church.

Ethel was born Oct. 18, 1909, at home near Buck Grove in Grundy County, the daughter of Lambert and Lena DeWeerdt Hoffman. She received her education in the Pleasant Valley Country School near Buck Grove.

She married David John Avery Feb. 11, 1937, at a Baptist church in Waterloo. The couple made their home in New Hartford and later farmed near Dumont, Allison, Aplington and Wellsburg. When they lived near Aplington, they ran the Buck Grove Grocery store until David died in 1980. She moved into Aplington in the early 1980s.

She is survived by three daughters, Charlotte (Charles) Miller, of Randall, Ivadeen (Dean) Proffitt, of Marshalltown, and Norleen (Paul) Willis, of Aplington; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great-grandchild; one sister-in-law, Luebertha Hoffman, of Parkersburg; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David Avery; one grandson, Neal Cooper; her parents; two sisters, Vera Hoffman and Leona Hoffman; and three brothers, John, Carl and Louis Hoffman.

Memorials may be directed to the charity of your choice, the Baptist Church, Easter Seal Camp or American Cancer Society.
