July 18, 1921-June 21, 2009

James R. King, 87, of Ames, formerly of the Chicago area, died Sunday, June 21, 2009, of kidney failure. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 24, at Haben Funeral Home and Crematory, 8057 Niles Center Road, in Skokie, Ill. Interment was private.

He graduated from Purdue University with a degree in chemical engineering. He also obtained an MBA from the University of Chicago.

During World War II, he served on the Manhattan Project.

He was vice president of marketing for the chemical division for the Quaker Oats Company for 25 years. He was a director of chemical plants in Belgium and England. He concluded his career at Iowa State University as an adjunct professor in marketing and a consultant to small businesses in Iowa.

James R. King was the beloved husband of Bette, nee Hurja; loving father of Kathleen (Alan Stroman), Susan (Marshall) Bohlin and James H. (Jayne Cleveland) King; cherished grandfather of David, Patrick and Alex King, and Colleen and Kaitlyn Bohlin; and fond brother of Mary Conway, Robert, Nancy Zaiden, Charles, and the late Donald.
