THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, June 23, 2009.

Maxine N. McGovern, 78, of Ames and formerly of Alexandria, Va., died Saturday, June 20, 2009, at Israel Family Hospice House. A Mass of resurrection will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 24, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Ames, with Father Ivan Nienhaus presiding. Interment will be in Mount Comfort Cemetery in Alexandria, Va.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, June 23, at Stevens Memorial Chapel. A prayer service will be at 6:30 p.m. with Deacon Ron Smith officiating.

Maxine McGovern was born Jan. 31, 1931, in East Liverpool, Ohio, to Charles and Alberta Headley. She graduated from McKinley High School in Canton, Ohio. She moved in 1950 to Washington, D.C., where she worked for the federal government until retiring in 1991.

She was married in 1950 to John J. Shine, who died in 1973. She was married in 1983 to James T. McGovern, who died in 2004. She was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church, where she was active in the 60-plus group and Eucharistic Adoration. She cherished her family and her home. Her skill and love of gardening were well known and many happy afternoons were spent at Reiman Gardens. Her love of gardening took a break in the fall, however, when her beloved Washington Redskins took to the field.

She is survived by her daughters, Kathleen Shine Otero and her husband, Raymond, and their children, Joshua and Mary, of Ames, and Kelly Shine Swift and her husband, David, and their son, Andrew, of Gainesville, Va.; her stepdaughters, Maureen McGovern, of Columbus, Ohio, and Patricia (Doug) Sweeney and their daughters, Alexa, Andrea and Carolyn; and one great-grandson, of Poland, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Tyrone Headley.
