Richard Fleig, 99, of Ames, died today, June 2, 2009, at home. Arrangements are pending with Adams Funeral Home and Cremation Service.

Richard Fleig, 99, of Ames, died Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at his home. Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 4, at Adams Funeral Home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 5, at Adams Funeral Home.

Richard was born Sept. 29, 1909, in Esslingen, Germany, to Emil and Bertha (Weissinger) Fleig. He graduated from Iowa State College in 1936, where he was an accomplished diver, winning the Big 6 Conference diving championship.

He became a lifelong member of the I Club, and a Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity brother.

He served in the U.S. Army, and was a member of the American Legion Post 37 and Elks Club in Ames. He worked for Lechner Engineering, the city of Marshalltown and retired from the Department of Transportation.

He was a handball and gin rummy champion and enjoyed bowling and golfing.

He married Mary Blount Dec. 13, 1945, in Des Moines.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; one son, John and wife, Connie, of Ames; two daughters, Jean Carroll and husband, Tom, of Sioux City, and Barb Fleig, of St. Paul, Minn.; grandchildren, Mary Greeley (Chad), Tommy Carroll (Amie), Anne Carroll and Haley Kauffman; great-grandchildren, Kayden Greeley and Colby Carroll; and nephews, Helmut Berger (Gudrun), of Lorch, Germany, and Fritz Palas (Eleanor), of Phoenix.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Gertrude and twin Elsa; and niece, Gretchen Campbell.
