Janice Kay, daughter of Christina Andersen and Irving Radabaugh, passed away at the age of 27 on October 25, in a tractor accident, Saturday afternoon, near Nevada, Iowa. Janice was helping her husband, Arthur Borton, with the farm harvest. Janice, was a secretary to the County Nurse, during the week, at the courthouse.
Janice was born on May 2, 1942, at Iowa Falls, Iowa. She began kindergarten at Iowa Falls and later moved with her parents and brother, Don, to Sheffield, Iowa. She attended school there and was a baton twirler in the marching band. In 1953 the family moved to Alden, Iowa on a farm and Janice attended the Buckeye, Iowa school. The family moved in 1956 to Ames, Iowa on a farm, and she graduated from the eighth grade at Milford Township. Janice, while in high school, was in many school activities and on the honor roll. She was a member of the girls' glee club, mixed chorus, a soloist, co-editor of the school paper, Magnet, on the Bulletin staff, in dramatics, and was a flag twirler in the marching band. She held class offices and was Junior Class president. She was a graduate of the Milford Township High School.
Janice became a member of 4-H while at Alden. In the Milford Merry Maids 4-H Club she served as secretary, treasurer, librarian, and president, big sister to younger 4-H girls, and received many local, and county awards in 4-H. She was a member of the 4-H County Chorus and served as County vice-president. She also was the recipient of the Girls' 4-H Citizenship Award.
While in high school she worked in the lunch room and typed for the teachers and superintendent. She was employed at Smart and Thrifty in Ames during the summer.
On September 20th, 1958 Janice was chosen as "Queen of The Furrow", as State Queen, of the Iowa Soil Conservation in the competition for 1959 at Mason City. Co-sponsors of the event were the American Wire and Fence Division of the U. S. Steel Corporation and WHO in Des Moines. Janice was a senior in Milford Township school when she received this honor. She attended many of the conservation banquets, during the year, and crowned some of the new "Queens of Conservation", in the local, county and state contests.
December 13, 1959, Janice Radabaugh was married to Arthur Borton at the Memorial Lutheran Church at Nevada. They resided on a farm near Nevada.
Janice was a member of the Memorial Lutheran Church and participated in the church women's activities.
She was a member of the Nevada Jay Cettes, serving as the 1965 chairman of the Jay Cettes committee, publicity chairman, first vice-president and the 1966 philantrophic chairman.
She was a member of the Women's Farm Bureau and served as an officer. February 24, 1965, she joined the Valley View Club and served as reporter. She was elected as the club president in 1967.
As a young girl Janice became interested in welfare and retarded children and enjoyed working with them.
