THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Friday, May 15, 2009.
Judith McManus Pepper, 69, of rural Ames, died Thursday, May 14, 2009, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. A funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 18, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, northwest of Gilbert, with the Rev. Dennis Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery.
The casket will be closed. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 17, at Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall streets in Boone, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral chapel.
Judy was born Dec. 10, 1939, in Boone, the daughter of Joseph and Edna (Carlson) McManus. She graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy in 1958 and completed nurse’s training at Mercy Hospital in 1961. She married William Pepper Sept. 8, 1962, in Des Moines.
She worked as a registered nurse at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Boone County Hospital in Boone, and hospitals in Story City and Ames. She later was a registered nurse at area nursing homes.
She was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church and the Rosary Society. She loved her family. She enjoyed baking for shut-ins, reading, politics, Irish tradition, and Iowa Hawkeyes football and basketball.
She is survived by her husband, William, of rural Ames; one son, Dan Pepper and his wife, Janelle, of Woodbury, Minn.; two daughters, Mary O’Brien and husband, Joseph, and Kathleen Pepper, all of Cranston, R.I.; one daughter-in-law, Tracey Pepper, of Kelley; two grandchildren, John and Sarah Pepper, both of Kelley; one brother, Joe McManus and wife, Paula, of Des Moines; and two sisters, Betty Sullivan and husband, Pat, of Des Moines, and Dee Van Thorre and husband, Jim, of Riverside, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her parents; infant daughter, Theresa Ann; one son, John, in March 2009; and one brother, Frank.
Memorials may be given to the family to establish a memorial at a later date.
