CEDAR RAPIDS
Charles Arthur Cooling, 70, of 1917 B Ave. NE, died Saturday, March 11, 2000, at home following a courageous battle with the neurological disease, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, for many years. He chose to donate his body to the University of Iowa Anatomy Department. The family will greet friends today, 5:50 to 7:30 p.m., at Noelridge Christian Church, 7111 C Ave. NE. A celebration service remembering his spirit and contributions to life will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the church, with Pastor Ron Connerly officiating. Arrangements are with the Stewart Funeral Home.
Survivors include his wife, Esther; a son, Kent and wife Sally Nordstrom Cooling of Cedar Rapids; two daughters, Kaye Chatterton and busband Dale of Onslow and Karyn Knutsen and husband Larry of Cedar Rapids; his mother, Julia Cooling of LeGrand; two sisters and their husbnds, Margaret and Dick Hajek of Solon and LaVonne and Walt Walters of Ely; eight brothers, Lyle and wife Joyce, Dallas and wife Mary and Dale, all of Solon, Lloyd and wife Lois of Ely, Vernon and wife Ruth of Garwin, Carol and wife Ruth and Gary and wife LouAnne, all of LeGrand, and Duane and wife Deb of Marshalltown; a sister-in-law, Joyce Cooling of Victor; eight grandchildren Chelsea and Chase Cooling, Jacob, Callie, Bethany and Kira Chatterton and Emily and Brian Bowser; several aunts and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Eldon, and a brother Darol.
Charles was born Nov. 15, 1929, in St. Anthony, Iowa, the eldest of 12 children of Eldon and Julia Borton Cooling. He graduated from high school in Clemons, Iowa, and received his standard teaching certificate and B.A. degree from what is now UNI at Cedar Falls and his M.A. degree from the University of Iowa. He married Esther DeWoody of Coggon on Aug. 9. 1953. He taught sevral years at Troy Mills and in 1959 moved to Cedar Rapids. He taught math and related subjects at Wilson Junior High. Afer the middle schools were formed, he finished his career at Roosevelt Middle School. He served in the U.S. Army at Fort Sill, Okla., 1954-1956. He was also an antiques deler for many years. He and fellow teacher, the late Fred Fischer, opened and operated The Old Bank on Six Antique Shop. He later owned Chuck's Antiques in Cedar Rapids and set up at Glandorf's Antiques Show in Westdale Mall. He was a member of Noelridge Christian Church, education associations and the Iowa Kate Shelley Doll Club.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who adored his family. He enjoyed gardening, plants, sports, and of course his real passion for antiques, always learning, willing to share his knowledge with others.
