THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Sunday, April 26, 2009.

Evelyn D. Helland, 82, died Friday, April 24, 2009, at Madrid Home. Visitation will be from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., Sunday, April 26, with a scripture service at 5:30 p.m. at Madrid Home.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday, April 27, at Fjeldberg Lutheran Church, Huxley. Burial will be in the Fjeldberg Cemetery.

Evelyn Helland was born July 14, 1926, in Ohio, to Kenneth and Bessie (Duvall) Fankhauser. She graduated from Napier High School, and attended the University of Iowa and AIB.

She married William Elder, and they had a daughter, Sandra. She later married Morris Helland on Dec. 28, 1949. With the arrival of Tamara and adoption of Sandy, they had their family.

She was an active member of Fjeldberg Lutheran Church and a member of “The Card Club” for more than 50 years. She and Morrie were active in farming and raising sheep. Whether it was fixing fence or dancing on a Friday night, they always had a great time together.

She is survived by two daughters, Sandra (Les) Slavens and Tamara Helland, all of Cortez, Co; two grandchildren, Karla and Christopher; two great grandchildren, Crystal and Joshua; and four great-great grandchildren, Sierra, Brooklyn, Ethen and Zane.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Fjeldberg Lutheran Church or Madrid Home.

Stevens Memorial Chapel is assisting the family.
