Ronald “Dean” Olson, 80, of Ames, died Thursday, April 16, 2009, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. A gathering of friends and family will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 18, at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care, 414 Lincoln Way, in Ames. A celebration of Dean’s life will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 19, at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care.

Ronald “Dean” Olson, 80, of Ames, died of complications from Parkinson’s disease Thursday, April 16, 2009, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. A gathering of friends and family will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 18, at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care, 414 Lincoln Way, in Ames. A celebration of Dean’s life will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 19, at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care. Dean has donated his body to the University of Iowa.

Dean was born May 18, 1928, in Ames, the son of Emil and Randa (Bauge) Olson. He graduated from Ames High School. He married Doris Moser on June 6, 1953, in Ames. He started farming with his dad. Dean and Doris then moved to the Iowa State University Curtiss Farm for 36 years, where he worked in farm services. He retired from Iowa State in 1991 due to Parkinson’s disease. He was a member of Westside Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife, Doris, of Ames; two daughters and sons in-law, Mary and Mike Boswell, of Canyon, Texas, and Jane and Jerry Spurlin, of Fort Dodge; three grandchildren, Clint (Delisa) Boswell, of Stinnette, Texas, Jesseca (John) Jackson, of Trophy Club, Texas, and Matthew Spurlin and his friend, Amanda, of Ames; two great-grandchildren, Jaret and Bray; his twin sister, Ramona Poulson, of Mountain Home, Ark.; sister, Helen (Howard) Koch, of Oswego, Ill.; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Wallace Olson, in Iwo Jima in 1945.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Israel Family Hospice House

Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care is assisting the family.
