Donald J. Nelson, 81, of West Des Moines passed away of cancer on April 3, 2009 at the Kavanagh House.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at Caldwell-Raddatz Funeral Home. Online condolences may be made at www.caldwellraddatz.com.

Don attended North High School in Des Moines, served in the U.S. Marine Corps and worked for various Allied Van Lines agents around the country as driver, sales agent and general manager for 56 years until his retirement from Ace Moving & Storage of West Des Moines in 2007.
He enjoyed traveling, music, recording movies, spending time with his family, playing cards with friends at Ballard Golf & Country Club in Huxley, and investing in various casinos throughout the Midwest and Las Vegas.

He was the son of Anna Clark and Arvid Nelson and was preceded in death by his son, Douglas Nelson.

He is survived by his long-time companion, Shirley Newbrough, and her family; his brother, Wayne (Ann) Nelson of Terra Alta, WV; his sons, Paul (Carol) Nelson of Atlanta, GA and Guy (Marietta) Nelson of West Des Moines and their families; grandson Matthew Nelson and great granddaughter Justine Lund of Portland, OR and grandson Joshua Nelson of Atlanta, GA; and by several step-grand and great step-grandchildren and extended family.

His family is thankful for the compassionate treatment he received from his doctors, nurses and caregivers the past 21 months since his diagnosis.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
