Charles Tucker, 74, of Roland, died Friday, April 3, 2009, at Bethany Manor in Story City. Services are pending with Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City.

Charles H. Tucker, 74, of Story City, formerly of Roland, died Friday, April 3, 2009. Visitation will be from 5 to7 p.m. Monday, April 6, in Bergen Church Fellowship Hall. The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 7, at Bergen Lutheran Church, Roland.

Charles Henry Tucker was born Oct. 22, 1934, in Herring (Sac County) to Armold and Bertha (Kluver) Tucker, the oldest of four children.

He graduated from Wall Lake High School in 1953. Following graduation, he attended Gale Institute (Minneapolis), training in railroad telegraphy. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955-57 and married Elaine L. Herrig on May 31, 1957. A graduate of Iowa State University, he joined the teaching staff at Roland Public Schools in 1961, and later the Roland-Story School district where he taught industrial arts and served as a patient instructor in the summer drivers’ education program. He retired from teaching in 1994, but continued working for Roland-Story as a bus driver.

He enjoyed music and singing with the choir, camping, metal and woodworking, as well as yard work and gardening. He and Elaine especially enjoyed traveling to visit their children and grandchildren. He was a ready volunteer in his community and church.

He is survived by his spouse, Elaine; four daughters, Kathy (DeWayne) Teig, Jane (Kurt) Kromminga, Kristen (Paul) Amensen, and Stacey (Bob) Amensen; two brothers and one sister, Bill (Sue) Tucker, Ron (Betty) Tucker and Kathryn Fiete; 10 grandchildren, Ian and Andrew Teig, Hailey and Ross Kromminga; Kelsey, Erica and Kyle Amensen, and Avery, Kari and Ethan Amensen.

He is preceded in death by his parents; one sister-in-law, Kay Tucker; and one brother-in-law, Richard Fiete.

Soderstrum Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Riverside Lutheran Bible Camp, Bergen Lutheran Church, the Iowa Chapter of the ALS Association, Homeward Hospice or Bethany Life communities.

The entire family would like to thank the staff at Homeward Hospice and Bethany Manor for their loving care of their dear husband, dad and grandpa. They also extend a special word of thanks once again to their friends, church families, neighbors and co-workers for all their acts of kindness these past months.
