THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, March 31, 2009.

John David Pepper, 44, of Kelley, and formerly of northeastern Boone County, died Sunday, March 29, 2009, at his home. A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 2, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Ames, with the Rev. Ivan Nienhaus officiating. Burial will be in Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery, northwest of Gilbert.

Friends may call from noon until 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, at Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall streets in Boone, where a vigil service will be at 7 p.m. The family will be present to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral chapel. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday at St. Cecilia Catholic Church.

John was born Feb. 14, 1965, in Des Moines, the son of William and Judith (McManus) Pepper. He graduated from Gilbert High School in 1983. On May 11, 1991, he married Tracey Hall at Sacred Heart Church in Boone. He was a professional painter employed at Iowa State University from May 1994 to November 2007, when he was diagnosed with leukemia. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, outdoor activities and neighborhood get-togethers.

He is survived by his wife, Tracey, of Kelley; one son, John Raymond Pepper; one daughter, Sarah Katherine Pepper, both of Kelley; his parents, William and Judith Pepper, of rural Ames; one brother, Raymond Pepper and wife, Janelle, of Woodbury, Minn.; two sisters, Mary O’Brien and husband, Joseph, and Kathleen Pepper, all of Cranston, R.I.; and his mother-in-law, Anita Roti and husband, Dominick, and his father-in-law, Raymond Hall and wife, Patricia, all of Chicago.

He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Theresa Ann Pepper.

Memorials may be directed to the family to be used at their discretion.
