THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, March 10, 2009.

Omagene P. Smith died Dec. 6, 2008. A memorial service for is planned for later this year.

Omagene was born Dec. 17, 1924, to William Henry and Stella Parkman. She grew up in Langdale, Ala., and graduated from Judson College in 1945. In 1964, she moved to Ames with her husband and family so she could attend graduate school at Iowa State University. After completing her master’s degree in child development, she worked as a daycare director and instructor in Ames and Des Moines.

In Ames, she was a member of the local chapters of D.A.R. and P.E.O. She belonged to Evangelical Free Church and had attended St. John’s Episcopal Church. She also was active in a local HEAL group that supported alternative medical therapies.

In recent years, she lived in Jamesport, Mo.

She is survived by one brother, Hugo Parkman, of Palmetto, Ga.; two sons, Richard, of Las Vegas, and Bruce, of Des Moines; and one granddaughter, Molly, of Des Moines.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William; one daughter, Carol; one brother, Dan; and two sisters, Ruth and Hewlett.
