Walter G. Lovely, 89, of Ames, died Friday, March 6, 2009, at Green Hills Health Care Center. Arrangements are pending with Adams Funeral Home and Cremation Service.

Walter G. Lovely, 89, of Ames, died Friday, March 6, 2009, at Green Hills Health Care Center in Ames. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 9, at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames, with Pastor Joel Wight-Hoogheem officiating. Burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Walter G. Lovely, 89, of Ames, died Friday, March 6, 2009, at Green Hills Health Care Center in Ames. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 9, at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames, with Pastor Joel Wight-Hoogheem officiating. Burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 8, at Adams Funeral Home in Ames.

Walter G. Lovely was born Aug. 19, 1919, in Fort Fairfield, Maine, to Sherman and Queenie (Canning) Lovely. He had lived in Fort Fairfield, Portland and Bangor, Maine, and Silver Springs, Md., prior to moving to Ames in 1950.

He was a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps and member of the 1st Marine Division in World War II. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maine and did graduate work at Iowa State University. He was an ag engineer at ISU, retiring in 1988.

On Aug. 16, 1947, he married Alma Marie Wasson in Bangor, Maine.

He was a member of Kiwanis Noon Club, Bethesda Lutheran Church, American Legion, AARP, ISU Retirees, NARFE, ASAE, American Agricultural Society, ESA and USSA.

He is survived by five children, Walter G. (Mary Lu) Lovely Jr., of Eden Prairie, Minn., Stephen N. (Jo) Lovely, of St. Joseph, Mo., Martha E. (Scott) Lilly, of Camarillo, Calif., Patricia A. Seeger, of Columbus, Ohio, and Robert A. (Kim) Lovely, of Echo, Ore.; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ruth, Lillace and Thelma; and three brothers, Luther, Thurber and Eugene.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma Marie, in 1997; one son, Michael W. Lovely, in 2002; two sisters, Marjorie and Anna; and two brothers, Arbor and John.

Memorials may be directed to On With Life or to his church.
