THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, December 24, 2008.

Sept. 12, 1932-Dec. 23, 2008

Richard Alvin Sorem, 76, of Ames, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, at Memorial Lutheran Church, 701 11th St., in Nevada, with Pastor John Anderson officiating. A luncheon will be served immediately following the service in the Fellowship Hall of the church. Burial, with full military rites, will be at 1 p.m. in Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Visitation with the family present will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 26, at Chet Ryan Mortuary, 708 Fifth St., in Nevada.

Richard was born Sept. 12, 1932, in Nevada, to John B. and Effie (Sampson) Sorem. He was a 1952 graduate of Milford High School. He served during the Korean conflict in the U.S. Air Force. He married Shirley Ann Hobgood Nov. 12, 1955, in Creedmoor, N.C. He was the owner of Sorem Manufacturing Inc. in Nevada. He was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church in Ames.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley A. Sorem, of Ames; three sons, Douglas P. (Launie J.) Sorem, of Boone, Blake A. (Caroline) Sorem, of Zearing, and Scott W. Sorem, of Ames; five grandchildren, Bryan Sorem, Melissa Bitters, and Holden, Wyatt and Delaney Sorem; three great-grandchildren, Douglas W. Sorem, Danny Sorem and Monte Bitters; four brothers, Stanley Sorem, of Winona, Minn., Arthur Sorem, of Story City, and Ronald (Sharianne) Sorem and Dale (Bev) Sorem, all of Nevada; and three sisters, Donna (Bill) Woods, of Shawnee, Colo., Barb (Duane) Brodie, of Ames, and Sandra Thoreson, of Beaufort, S.C.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Stanley John; and two sisters-in-law, Martha Sorem and Delores Sorem.

A memorial fund has been established in Richard's name.

Chet Ryan Mortuary and Cremation Services is in charge of arrangements.
